Outfitted with a complete host of control options, the Instant Phaser Mk II is out of the rack and into your plugin arsenal. This new emulation of the classic effect accomplishes the same legendary sound notably used on hits like Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and “Presence”. The capabilities have been expanded, and now you can even take your phaser on an excursion from the 70s far into the future with the delightfully characteristic “Age” knob.

New Age, Old Age, and Everything in Between

As hardware phase-shift networks get older, they don’t line up as well as they used to, revealing their analog character. The resulting effect is less exact, for tracks where imprecise nature is desired. While component drift and unintentional effects are usually omitted in hardware emulation, we’ve decided to put the ball in your court. For a phasing sound that’s straight out of the factory, set Age to 0%. To capture the sound of the same phaser 47 years later (present-day), set Age to 25%. The remaining 75% allows you to discover the Instant Phaser among the wreckage of a dilapidated studio hundreds of years from now and check it out on your new single.

Change the Feel, Switch the Mode

The Instant Phaser Mk II offers three different sonic characteristics that change the amount of phase-shift sections, simply labeled “Shallow”, “Deep”, and “Wide”. When “Wide” is selected, the Instant Phaser Mk II gives you a different amount of phase-shifting on both right and left channels, resulting in a slightly different effect in each ear. You can use this to turn flat mono guitars into huge stereo leads, or make your single-channel synthesizer fill out the sides of your mix.

Different Ways to Phase

The Instant Phaser allows four distinct methods to control the phasing:

Manual allows precise automation of the phasing.

Oscillator modulates the phasing at a constant rate that you decide.

Envelope changes the phase whenever your signal passes the specified threshold. Total control over the Phase shifter provides you with adjustability and allows you to obtain the desired contour with high precision. Have you ever wondered where does that unique magical breeze so audible in most of Jean Michael Jarre's tunes come from? Surprisingly the backbone here isn't the synth itself but the effect unit coupled with the synthesizer, saying more precisely - analogue phaser of which Fazortan 2 seems to be a fine equivalent. Thanks to the analogue modelling technique D16 were able to implement all-pass filters comprising characteristics identical to its analogue counterpart based on Operational Transconductance Amplifiers. Now in version 2 D16 are even closer to the sound character the original hardware unit brings.

You can think about Fazortan 2 as the exact copy of a retro phaser taken out from the '70s and redone to become a virtual unit. But being the same sounding unit that provides primal functionality and sound of the original is where similarities end and where limitless scope of plugin comes to play. Bearing in mind only one Rate knob and a Color switch on the front panel of the real phaser device, Fazortan 2 from the first look at its GUI, presents itself as a completely new device that effectively expands the capabilities of its origin.

Structure

Full control over two LFOs (waveform, rate and depth) controlling the unit and unlike the hardware unit Fazortan 2 LFO works in various waveform modes: sinus, triangle, hyper-triangle and random (i.e. only triangle is available in original).

By using both LFOs simultaneously you're now able to obtain the result that owners of the hardware box could only dream about. Endless contour diversity stretches results from monotonous sluggish swing to become a gurgling scrumble, just by a slight repositioning of the rate knob. Additionally, it is now possible to add consecutive all-pass stages as well as regulate the feedback effect. The amount of stages translates to how many humps and pits residues are in the converted sound spectrum while the feedback parameter value implies the severity of these irregularities. The feedback knob gives you sounds from soft to rapid and drilling. To visually display how it works, consider white noise as an input signal. Moving the feedback knob will start to morph incoming "sea waves" reminiscent noise into "windy" whizz. Additionally, each LFO can be modified by altering its respective phase giving, as a result, an improved panning of the incoming signal.

Who would like to use it?

The best way to judge Fazortan 2 is to listen to it. D16 made every effort to make sure Fazortan will fulfil all expectations one could have before buying an analogue phaser unit. Especially guitarists and retro keyboard players may appreciate the possibility to adjust it so it can emulate the rotary speaker, what along with its rich and lush sound, completes satisfactorily every audio chain.

Of course, given much more manoeuvrability it is a fine fx unit to be adapted regardless of genre.

Features

True emulation of a classic analogue all-pass phase shifter.

2 full controllable LFOs

LFO synchronization with host application

Unique sound different from the other digital phasers

64bit internal processing

No harmonic distortions at output

Tag-based preset browser

Two alternative GUI sizes

MIDI-learn functionality throughout

System Requirements

Windows

Windows 7 - 10 (32 or 64-bit)

CPU - Single-core 2.0 GHz SSE (Multi-core 2.4 GHz SSE recommended)

RAM - 8 GB (16 GB Recommended)

Plugin Formats - VST2, VST3, AAX

Mac

macOS 10.13 - macOS 12 Monterey (64-bit only)

CPU - Intel 1.8 GHz / Apple M1 (Intel 2.4 GHz / Apple M1 recommended)

RAM - 8 GB (16 GB Recommended)

Plugin Formats - VST2, VST3, AU, AAX

Please Note: This is not a standalone program - a host application (DAW) is required to use it.

PhaseMistress

"Phase Mistress is the best-sounding phaser I've heard since I put my favorite hardware phaser back in the box."

Richard Hilton. Producer, Engineer, Keyboardist with Nile Rodgers Productions

Analog Phase Shifter

Rich Phase Sweeps, Deep Analog Vibe, and Tempo-Locked Modulation

From funk-laced guitars to swooshing disco drums to jazz-fusion keys and bombastic rock vocals, phase shifting is a wildly diverse effect that’s at the heart of countless records from the 60s to today. PhaseMistress captures the sounds of legendary phasers and packs them into one plug-in that takes this creative effect to the next level.

At Soundtoys, they have a bit of a phaser hoarding problem. Soundtoys have them stacked in their test room, stock room and literally lining the halls. When designing PhaseMistress, Soundtoys carefully studied some of the best like the Bi-Phase, Boss Super Phaser, Phase 90, Moogerfooger 12 stage, Small Stone, Trine and many more. Soundtoys needed to be sure PhaseMistress nailed that rich, silky analog sound. Then Soundtoys went further and added deep tweakability and a range of inspiring rhythmic tools. Soundtoys think you’re going to love what they came up with.

Deeply Customizable

While PhaseMistress comes packed with useful presets and an easy-to-use hardware-inspired interface, Soundtoys also give you deep control over the phasing “circuit” that gives this effect its distinctive sound. You can choose from 69 different styles of presets that alter the phaser’s internal structure. Set the number of stages from subtle 2-stage phasing up to a wild 24 stages. You can also fine-tune the resonance, colour and intensity of the effect to craft your own unique phase-shifting styles.

Versatile and Creative

Many phasers create their whooshing sound with the help of a humble low-frequency oscillator (LFO). That’s great when you want a simple back-and-forth sweep. But what if you want something a bit more out there? In PhaseMistress you can choose from a multitude of creative LFO shapes that go beyond what you’ll find in hardware–and you can even draw your own curves in the Tweak panel. For cool robotic effects, try the random mode and step mode for phase shifts that jump rather than sweep. Rhythm mode lets you program your own rhythmic patterns, or choose from some great pre-made ones, too. And in Envelope mode, PhaseMistress responds to the dynamics of the incoming audio making it an awesome rhythm-triggered effect for funky drums, slap bass or rhythm guitar sounds.

It’s on guitar, bass, drums, vocals (Queen, ELO, Pink Floyd anybody?), and even whole mixes. Soundtoys have heard crushed envelope-phased drums and gritty-phased-out radio guitars. Turns out it’s more powerful than even Soundtoys thought. This is one phase you won’t grow out of.

Features

Recreate the silky, funky sounds of a huge range of hardware phasers

Get authentic analog sounds with 69 different built-in phasing styles

Tweak circuit-level options to design your own phasing styles

Choose from 6 different operation modes: LFO, Rhythm, Step, Random and more

Create envelope follower and trigger effects that respond to the music

Draw your own LFO waveshapes and unique rhythmic patterns

System Requirements

Mac

macOS 10.12 Sierra and later (Intel / Apple Silicon supported) (64-bit only)

VST2, VST3, AU, AAX Native, AAX AudioSuite

Windows

Windows 7 and later (64-bit only)

VST2, VST3, AAX Native, AAX AudioSuite

Supported Sample Rates:

Minimum - 44.1 kHz

Maximum - 192 kHz

Important Notes:

A FREE account at ilok.com is required (a physical USB iLok is not required)

This software is 64-bit only and is not compatible with 32-bit systems.

Officially Supported Host Applications:

All version 5 Soundtoys products come in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU and AAX Native plugin formats.

Supported DAWs:

Pro Tools 11 - 2022.6 (Mac & PC: AAX Native and AudioSuite)

Logic Pro X - 10.7 (Mac: AudioUnits)

Ableton Live 9.2.2 - 11 (Mac: AudioUnits & VST; Windows: VST)

Studio One 4.5+ (Mac: AudioUnits & VST; Windows: VST)

Cubase 9.5 - 12 (Mac & PC: VST)

Nuendo 8 - 11 (Mac & PC: VST)

Reaper 6 (Mac: AudioUnits & VST; Windows: VST)

Bitwig 4 (Mac & PC: VST)
